Time Management: The One Resource You Cannot Purchase
It’s true in the workplace and in your personal life: Time is precious. In our fast-paced, hectic world, there never seems to be enough time to get everything done. Of course, sometimes, the failure to meet obligations is our own doing, not necessarily the fact that our days are too busy with assignments and responsibilities. But time management is possible, and if you can learn this skill, you’ll find your days will be smoother and much less stressful. But this isn’t something you can buy from a store or purchase from an online training program. However, there are certain steps you can take to better handle your daily schedules and ensure that you keep your head above water.
If you ever take a look at your schedule and notice it’s jam-packed with meetings, appointments and tasks, you’re not alone. It’s seems just about everyone has work and home duties from sunup to sundown, sometimes with few breaks. One way to better management this challenge is to make sure you accomplish the most important things first. Consider what tasks need to be fulfilled today and what ones can legitimately wait until tomorrow or beyond. Cut out some of the unnecessary activities if they’re getting in the way of essential ones.
Make a Schedule and Keep it With You
Some people can keep a detailed list of their responsibilities in their head and recall everything at the blink of an eye. The rest of us need help remembering. For better time management, try writing down your daily tasks—including what they are, what time they start and end, and where you need to be for them. After the event has ended, jot down a few notes about the results of the activity. Not only will this keep you on track, but it might reveal that some of your tasks are more time wasting than important.
Don’t Make Commitments You Know You Can’t Keep
Some people just can’t say no. If you’re the type of person who volunteers for every assignment or expresses a willingness to help out with every little project or event, take a step back and evaluate whether you can honestly follow through with these tasks. If you simply don’t have time or energy to do something extra, don’t.
Prepare yourself for the inevitable interruptions and unplanned disturbances. Days rarely go perfectly as planned. Build in these times to your schedule.
